SERVICES & PREVENTION RESOURCES

Every year, viruses such as influenza (flu), COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other viral illnesses cause hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths in the United States, especially during the fall and winter virus season (CDC).

To help stop the spread of these viruses, it’s important to increase awareness, confidence, and access to vaccines, especially for groups of people who face challenges in getting vaccinated. This includes adults who may not have health insurance. To make sure everyone can get vaccinated, it is important to focus on making vaccines more available and removing barriers that prevent people from getting them, such as social, geographic, or financial issues.

One way to improve vaccination rates is by educating and empowering trusted leaders in the community to share information about vaccines. These leaders can help spread the message, answer questions, and encourage people to get vaccinated. By creating more opportunities for people to get vaccines and working closely with healthcare providers, we can make it easier for everyone to protect themselves from these dangerous illnesses.

North Central Health District’s (NCHD) Supporting Health Initiatives & Nurturing Equity (SHINE) program is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded program under the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) five-year cooperative agreement. The SHINE program is working closely with the local health departments, other community partners, and existing coalitions with the goal of preventing chronic diseases and improving health in Baldwin, Hancock, and Washington Counties.

The SHINE Program will implement these proven public health strategies:

  • Healthy food choices easier everywhere—promoting food service and nutrition guidelines, expanding fruit and vegetable voucher incentive and/or produce prescription programs.
  • Safe and accessible physical activity—connecting pedestrian, bicycle, or transit transportation networks to everyday destinations. Implement policies and activities to connect pedestrian, bicycle, or transit transportation networks (called activity-friendly routes) to everyday destinations.
  • Early care and education (ECE) settings—improving nutrition and physical activity and increasing breastfeeding and promoting Farm to ECE.
  • Routine adult vaccines—increasing awareness, confidence, demand, and access to routinely recommended adult vaccines, for racial and ethnic groups experiencing disparities in immunization, including uninsured adults.

Catch Up, Stay Up – The mission of the SHINE Program’s Catch Up, Stay Up campaign is to encourage adults take care of their own health, the health their loved ones, and also the people in their community they encounter on a regular basis by catching up and staying up on their routine vaccinations. Together, we’re working to keep our community healthy and prevent diseases that vaccines can protect against.

EARLY CHILDCARE AND EDUCATION

Early care and education (ECE) settings, such as daycare centers and preschools, are important places for helping children develop healthy habits. By improving nutrition, increasing physical activity, and promoting breastfeeding, ECE programs can play a key role in setting children on the path to a healthy life. These programs can create policies and activities that support healthy eating, encourage active play, and help mothers with breastfeeding, all of which contribute to a child’s growth and development.

One of the best ways to improve nutrition and physical activity in ECE programs is by promoting Farm to ECE initiatives. This involves bringing fresh, local food into early care settings, making it easier for children to eat healthy, nutritious meals. Providing healthy food options and encouraging physical activity during the day helps children learn good habits early in life.

Since so many children attend ECE programs, these settings are an ideal place to lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy living. By focusing on good nutrition, regular exercise, and breastfeeding support, ECE programs can make a lasting impact on children’s health. These changes can help ensure that children grow up strong, healthy, and ready to thrive.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Safe and accessible physical activity is essential for promoting a healthy lifestyle. One of the best ways to encourage physical activity is by connecting pedestrian, bicycle, and public transit networks to everyday destinations. These connections, called “activity friendly routes,” make it easier for people to walk, bike, or take public transportation to places they need to go, such as homes, schools, parks, work, health care centers, and grocery stores.

Having access to safe spaces for physical activity is important. This includes parks, trails, safe streets, and greenways where people can play and walk. It’s also important for communities to provide easy, safe ways to get to these places. Whether it’s walking on sidewalks, biking on bike lanes, or using public transit, being able to get to everyday destinations safely encourages people to stay active.

To help people be more active, communities should focus on improving their built environment. This means creating places that have both activity-friendly routes and accessible destinations nearby. By improving things like street designs, bike lanes, and public transit, and making sure important places like schools, parks, and grocery stores are close by, communities can help everyone stay active and healthy.

Activity Friendly Routes

These may include new or improved:

  • Street pattern design and connectivity, such as convenient, connected, and accessible streets that create many route options, shorter block lengths, and shorter crossing distances.
  • Pedestrian infrastructure, such as sidewalk networks that can include trails, traffic calming, intersection safety, street lighting, benches, public bathrooms, shade, and landscaping.
  • Bicycle infrastructure, such as bicycle networks that can include slow/safe streets, protected bikeways, trails, traffic calming, intersection safety, street lighting, public bathrooms, shade, and landscaping.
  • Public transit infrastructure and access, such as transit networks that include expanded services, times, and locations and public bathrooms that are safe and easy to access.

Everyday Destinations

These may include increased:

  • Proximity to community or neighborhood destinations, such as homes, worksites, schools, parks, grocery stores, health care facilities, pharmacies, and other shops.
  • Mixed land use such as neighborhoods that combine restaurants, offices, housing, or shops.
  • Residential density to increase the variety of housing options in an area through compact community design and other approaches that reduce travel distances.
  • Parks and recreational facility access, such as parks and recreational facilities close to homes.

HEALTH AND NUTRITION

Making healthy food choices easier is an important step in promoting better nutrition and overall health. One way to do this is by promoting food service and nutrition guidelines in places where food is sold, served, or distributed, such as schools, hospitals, and community centers. These guidelines help ensure that the food provided is nutritious and supports healthy eating habits.

Another way to encourage healthy eating is by expanding fruit and vegetable voucher programs and produce prescription programs. These programs offer people discounts or vouchers to help them purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, making it easier for everyone to include healthy foods in their diets. By offering these programs, states and communities can encourage people to make healthier food choices.

When healthy foods are not easy to find, people may be more likely to choose unhealthy alternatives. To help solve this problem, communities can work to improve access to healthy foods by supporting local farmers’ markets, making grocery stores stock more fresh produce, and offering incentives for healthier food options. By making healthy foods more accessible, we can help people make better choices for their health and well-being.
