Learn about our AmeriCorps Foundations Tutorial Program

CIS of Georgia AmeriCorps Foundations Tutorial Program provides an opportunity for committed participants to engage in tutoring activities which target students from Kindergarten to 5th grade.

The AmeriCorps Foundations Tutorial Program encourages the spirit of service through engaging committed participants in leadership trainings, community service projects and recruiting volunteers in programs and/or projects that are not limited to tutoring.

This approach builds on our history of success in communities throughout Georgia. AmeriCorps members will provide no less than 25 hours a week from September to June. AmeriCorps members will provide literacy and math support at school sites as well as community service initiatives and participate in member development activities related to the program.

Communities In Schools of Georgia AmeriCorps Members are challenged to fully participate in a cohesive, diverse, task-oriented team focused on school-based programming, service project implementation and general leadership development. 

Members will be committed to community service, supporting the public-school system and the individual student by engaging families, teachers and community members in education. Some ways in which you will do this include:  

Tutoring Program Development

AmeriCorps members will provide small group and one on one tutoring with their assigned school or educational program. These responsibilities include establishing a daily routine, working with teachers and staff to identify students for tutoring, developing and implementing creative and exciting activities for tutoring and programs.  

Program Training

AmeriCorps members will participate fully in leadership development, civic engagement, project development, tutoring and tutoring training. Members will participate in a series of virtual New Service Year Orientation (NSO). During NSO members will receive skills training essential to program success. Throughout the program year, members will be engaged through bi-weekly conference calls/webinars. Topics to include child development, school environments, parent engagement, diversity, curricula and intervention models, key stakeholder collaboration and tutoring/instructional techniques.

Volunteer Management

AmeriCorps members will assist in the recruitment, retention and recognition of community volunteers who serve at various Communities In Schools projects. Members will help plan service projects, recruit volunteers to deliver programming, and support volunteers in completion of assigned tasks during their service time. In addition, members will assist in maintaining a welcoming atmosphere and positive relationship between volunteers, school staff, students and Communities In Schools.

Special Events and Projects

AmeriCorps members will engage in national service events such as MLK day, Volunteer Week and AmeriCorps week to support community strengthening.
